Visiting is the best way to understand what makes Auburndale Community Nursery School special. During a tour, you’ll see our five classrooms in action, meet our directors and teachers, visit our playground, and have time to ask questions about your child’s needs.

Tours usually take place during the school morning so you can see children engaged in play, circle time, and projects. We recommend scheduling in the fall or early winter, since enrollment for the next school year typically begins in early winter and spaces fill quickly.

Questions We Can Help With

Families reach out to us about all kinds of topics. We’re happy to help with:

Finding Our School

ACNS is located at 230 Central Street in Auburndale, one of Newton’s villages, near the intersection of Route 128 and the Mass Pike (I-90). The Auburndale commuter rail station is nearby for parents traveling into Boston.

We’re a short drive from every Newton village — including West Newton, Newtonville, Waban, and Newton Lower Falls — and conveniently close to Waltham, Weston, Wellesley, Watertown, and Needham.

Hours

Preschool: Monday through Friday, 9:00am–12:00pm, following a school-year calendar similar to the Newton Public Schools.

Flexible childcare: 8:00–9:00am and 12:00–5:30pm on school days, billed by the hour.

Office hours: Our directors are generally available by phone during the school day. If we miss your call, please leave a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Before Your Visit

To make the most of your tour, you may want to read about our philosophy on the Our Philosophy page, meet the team on Our Educators, and explore our approach to early childhood education in Newton. Bring your questions — no question is too small. Many families find it helpful to think about their child’s temperament, their family’s weekly schedule, and what they hope their child will gain from preschool.

Children are welcome to join tours. Seeing the classroom, the art easels, and the playground often helps little ones feel excited about starting school.

What to Expect After You Reach Out

When you contact us, a director will respond as soon as possible — usually within one or two school days. We’ll answer your questions, share information about current openings, and find a tour time that works for your family. If a class is full, we’ll explain how our waitlist works and let you know about other schedule options, such as a different number of mornings.

After your tour, we’ll send enrollment information, including the registration form, the $40 registration fee, and the $500 deposit that reserves your child’s place and is applied to tuition. Once enrolled, you’ll receive welcome materials, health forms required by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, and details about the gradual start in September.

Families from across Newton and nearby towns tell us the process felt personal and easy. We look forward to getting to know you and your child.

Tips for Choosing a Preschool

Visiting several programs is a great way to find the right fit. As you tour, notice how teachers speak to children, whether children seem engaged and happy, and how the classroom is organized. Ask about teacher qualifications and ratios, how the school handles separation and conflict, and how teachers communicate with families. Think about your child’s temperament — does a smaller, homelike setting feel right? — and your family’s weekly schedule.

At ACNS, we welcome all of these questions. Our longstanding teachers, play-based curriculum, and decades of experience are described on our Preschool Program and Our Philosophy pages. We’re happy to talk through anything else when you call (617) 527-0723.

Accessibility & Special Requests

If you need a particular tour time, would like to bring grandparents or other caregivers, or have questions about how we support children with allergies, developmental differences, or other needs, please let us know when you contact us. We will do our best to accommodate your family and make sure you have all the information you need to make a confident decision. We look forward to welcoming you to Auburndale.
